2025 Bootcamp Retrospective

From lab to launch: the MediLab3D story

Mihai Dragomir and Eduard Liciu, won the Jury Award at the 2025 Demo Day in Timișoara with a bioprinting solution for tissue reconstruction designed to make personalised surgery faster, more accessible and more affordable

What made the largest difference

Looking back on the programme, they point to three things that made the biggest difference.

A new language. Their idea was developed in a university setting. The bootcamp helped them explain it to investors, partners and industry, giving them the tools to move confidently between research and business.

Business skills. They learned how to think about cost estimation, business models and scaling. That gave them the confidence to develop new projects without feeling overwhelmed by the commercial side of innovation.

Recognition. Winning the Jury Award gave the team visibility within the innovation ecosystem. New conversations, partnerships and opportunities began to come to them, rather than the other way around.

Since Demo Day ...

In less than a year, the team has expanded into a laboratory three times larger, where they will deliver educational 3D printing activities for UMFCD, student organisations and other partners, alongside producing patient-specific anatomical models for doctors and hospitals.

The new facility also marks the start of their CE certification process. They have signed collaboration contracts with two companies for CAD design services compatible with 3D printing, and the team has grown with two volunteer engineers who share their passion for medical 3D printing.

MediLab3D shows what can happen when strong research is paired with entrepreneurial skills, the right network and early visibility.

Their work has the potential to make patient-specific medical devices more affordable, more scalable and more accessible across healthcare systems.

This is exactly the kind of journey the 1Health Innovation Bootcamp is designed to support: helping researchers and innovators turn promising ideas into solutions with real-world impact.
